Landmark Redistricting Bill: Under Steve's law passed in 2008, Suffolk County is the first county in New York State to take the politics out of redrawing legislative district lines (the centuries-old practice of Gerrymandering), and will give that authority to an independent panel.
Ethics: Steve was the first Suffolk County Executive to appoint an Ethics Director, has implemented annual ethics training seminars for employees, and requires all Executive employees to report any income from outside the county annually, to reduce potential conflicts of interest.
Planning Commission Reform: Steve revised the membership of the Suffolk County Planning Commission—prohibiting political leaders from serving on this important board and establishing criteria for membership appointments which seek a wide variety of expertise.
Police Deployment: Steve gave authority to the Police Commissioner to implement sweeping staffing reforms within the department—which put more officers on the streets and fewer officers performing non-police duties which can be performed by lower-paid civilians.
Member Item Reform: Steve's legislation in 2008 established greater transparency and minimum thresholds for Legislative member item grants.
Regional Thinking: Steve helped revitalize the Bi-County Planning Council to address major Long Island issues and has brought a regional thinking, cooperative approach in working with all ten Suffolk towns and school districts throughout the county.
Government Perks: Steve dramatically reduced the number of vehicles which were handed out to employees as "perks".
Member Item Reform: Steve enacted legislation in 2008 which established greater transparency and minimum thresholds for Legislative "member item" grants.
